FAQs

How do they get tater tots to stick together? ›

We know that what keeps the Tater Tots stuck together is a combination of two pretty sticky things: moist starches and proteins.

How do I get the crispiest tater tots? ›

A slightly longer cook time makes the most delicious difference in both the taste and texture of tater tots. A longer cook time will cause the tots to shrink and dry out a little, which makes them even crispier all around on the outside with a potato-y center that's more dense and creamy.

Should I thaw tater tots before baking? ›

In fact, it's recommended to bake them from frozen to ensure they cook evenly and become crispy on the outside. What temperature should I bake frozen tater tots at? Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) before baking the frozen tater tots. This high temperature will help them become crispy without becoming soggy.

What are tater tots? ›

Tater tots are grated potatoes formed into small cylinders and deep-fried, often served as a side dish.

Should you flip tater tots in the oven? ›

2Drizzle the tops of tater tots with the remaining oil, then bake until golden brown on the bottom, about 12 minutes. 3Carefully flip each tater tot — using two forks helps to wiggle any tots that are more stuck than others — then bake until the second side is golden brown, another 12 to 15 minutes.

How to cook tater tots so they don't fall apart? ›

Place the tater tots into the air fryer. You can put them in more than a single layer when they are frozen, but I find they cook better and break apart less when I keep them in a single layer. Air fry on 375℉/190℃ for about 12 minutes or until they are golden brown.

Why aren't my tater tots getting crispy? ›

You want them crispy, tater tots need to be cooked at a high temperature for this to happen. 375-400F is great, I find 375F the sweet spot to get them crispy but to also cook the inside before the outside burns.

What is the English version of tater tots? ›

Here in the UK you won't find 'tater tots' in the supermarkets. However you will find hash browns which are basically tater tots formed into a larger, usually triangle shape. In recent years, supermarkets have started stocking mini hash browns. These are almost identical to tater tots and perfect for this recipe.

How many tater tots per person? ›

Nutrition Facts

Serving Size: about 8 pieces (2.52 oz.)

Do you season tater tots before or after cooking? ›

In the case of tots, you'll want to pour the frozen tots onto a sheet tray, toss with a bit of olive oil, add a few shakes of seasoned salt, then toss again to coat the tots. Pop 'em in the oven and roast until warm and crispy.

Why can't you put tater tots in the microwave? ›

Although you can microwave Tater Tots, it's not recommended. The microwave will warm the Tots, but they won't get as crispy as when you bake, deep-fry or grill them.

How to get tater tots crispy in the oven? ›

The secret? Rolling each tot in a little olive oil before baking for a crispy on the outside, soft on the inside tater tot. Once the tots are out of the oven, sprinkle with garlicky parmesan cheese.

What are tater tots called in England? ›

In the UK we call these potato croquettes, which comes from the French word croquet, which means to bite or to crunch. We call them tater tots.

What is a tater baby? ›

Tater babies are seasoned potato wedges served with a creamy cheddar cheese sauce.

Why do my tater tots fall apart? ›

The sticky-starchy of the potatoes is the binder, remember, and too many other ingredients will make your tots crumble.

Why do my tater tots stick? ›

Arrange Tater Tots on a Baking Sheet

This will prevent the tater tots from sticking and make cleanup a breeze. Evenly arrange the frozen tater tots in a single layer on the baking sheet. Avoid overcrowding them, as this can lead to uneven cooking.

How do you fry tater tots without them sticking together? ›

To prevent tater tots from sticking together while deep frying, it's important to add them to the hot oil in small batches. Overcrowding the fryer can cause the tater tots to clump together, so fry them in batches for the best results.

How are tater tots made commercially? ›

Once the potatoes are properly mixed with the binders and seasonings, they are formed into the iconic cylindrical or barrel-shaped tater tots using specially designed machines. These machines shape the mixture into regular-sized tots through a process called extrusion.
