New social and affordable homes for Queenslanders on the way 🏘 Shovels are in the ground for 30 new homes as part of our Miami Social Homes project delivered in partnership with the Queensland Government.These homes will provide quality, accessible, and safe living spaces for vulnerable seniors and people with disabilities.Developed on the site of a previous underutilised aging unit complex, the Miami project is a perfect example of optimising land use and revitalising aging housing stock.This is one of three projects by our Queensland subsidiary Community Housing Qld Ltd (CHQL) which will see 101 new social homes delivered across the Gold Coast. Community Housing Ltd proudly supports the 2024 National Reconciliation Week's theme Now More Than Ever. With over 16% of our tenants identifying as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, CHL is committed to improving housing outcomes for First Nations communities through self-determination. We believe that empowering the Aboriginal communities to shape their own housing futures is crucial for ensuring culturally appropriate and sustainable solutions. Our Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) is a key driver in our reconciliation journey as an organisation. We are continuously enhancing respectful cultural practices throughout our organisation, demonstrating our commitment to reconciliation and inclusivity. Our efforts are guided by state working groups and a national working group, which together oversee the implementation of 132 actions outlined in our Innovate RAP. These groups ensure that our initiatives are aligned with the needs and aspirations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. To date, we have successfully completed 54 of these actions, marking significant progress in fostering a culturally aware and respectful environment within CHL. During this year's Reconciliation Week, we have planned a range of activities and experiences across our offices. We are excited to share that planning approval has been received to redevelop the Essex Street housing site in Prahran, Melbourne. This is one of four locations being redeveloped as part of Homes Victoria's Ground Lease Model 2 project and delivered by the Building Communities consortium.Last weekend the official announcement was made onsite by the Minister for Planning the Hon. Sonya Kilkenny alongside our CEO Danny Dracic, Tetris Capital Principal Ryan Slocombe, Women's Property Initiatives CEO Roberta Buchanan and Icon Construction Manager Nick Taylor. The project will include 155 modern and energy-efficient homes featuring a mix of social, affordable, and private rental homes, resulting in a 37% increase in social housing at the site. Communal and open spaces will also be delivered that residents and the wider community in Prahran can enjoy. Our CEO Danny Dracic has welcomed the 10% increase in the Commonwealth Rent Assistance and an additional $1.9 billion in concessional financing for CHOs to deliver projects via the Housing Australia Future Fundannounced in the Federal budget and said, ‘they were important measures to address the rising rent pressures and growing housing shortage.'‘However, these are not adequate to meet the anticipated demand of 1 million homes by 2036 and more needs to be done. The Community Housing (CH) sector is already delivering thousands of social and affordable homes and has established itself as a confident and capable partner for the government to deliver innovative housing solutions in collaboration with the private sector. We are well-positioned and ready to ramp up the current momentum in providing more homes ensuring more people can be housed sooner,’ he said. Danny has also welcomed the $13 million funding to support building and construction industry sector to gain Work Health and Safety accreditation required to participate in Government-funded housing projects and said that will encourage construction companies to proactively partner with the CH sector to deliver new social and affordable housing.
