The Team You’ll Work With

This position is based in the Mayor’s Office of Risk Management and Compliance (MORMC), which was created by Mayor Eric Adams to assist City agencies in assessing their operational, financial and compliance risks, addressing waste and mismanagement, and improving the effectiveness of City operations. MORMC works on Citywide projects and directly with individual City agencies to help them create and enhance risk management and compliance programs and develop tools that will enable them to flag programmatic and operational risks.

The Problems You’ll Solve

Under the overall direction of the MORMC Director, review selected City programs, operations, policies and procedures, contracts, and transactions to identify compliance issues and assess financial, operational, and reputational risk, including potential instances of waste and abuse of City funds and resources. Recommend appropriate remedial and preventive actions.

  • Develop and recommend plans for MORMC projects to address targeted risks and compliance issues.
  • Manage projects assigned by the MORMC Director; assign tasks and work with MORMC team to compile the relevant facts, using the best available financial and operational data, literature, and structured meetings and interviews with knowledgeable individuals.
  • Research and assign research of the applicable law and related legal and administrative materials.
  • Identify possible remedies, and recommend practical preventive measures to protect the City’s interests, including among others,
  • Referral for investigation and legal action.
  • Recoupment of funds from vendors and other contractual remedies.
  • Administrative action by the City, such as revised policies and contractual provisions for prospective use.

Prepare and present written reports of documented findings and recommendations, using appropriate applications and tools for presentation to senior City officials.

About You

  • You have admission to the New York State Bar; and three years of recent full-time responsible, relevant, satisfactory legal experience, including complex and significant legal work subsequent to admission to any bar.
  • You possess the maturity, discretion, and judgment necessary for the handling of a myriad of sensitive, and often confidential, matters, and advising public servants at all levels.
  • You have exceptional organizational, analytical, interpersonal/collaborative, time-management, multi-tasking and writing skills, including the ability to problem solve, take initiative, prioritize duties, work independently and within a team environment, with a commitment to follow-up and detail.
  • You have strong writing and analytical skills are also required, as is a temperament suitable to work in and help lead a small, collegial office.
  • Prior government experience is a plus.

Salary

The City of New York Office of the Mayor’s compensation package includes a market competitive salary, equity for all full-time roles and exceptional benefits. Our cash compensation range for this role is $185,000 to $197,000.

Final offers may vary from the amount listed based on candidate experience and expertise, and other factors.
